Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 large large onion (Use a sweeter onion like a Vidalia for a milder flavor.)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (Can substitute with gluten-free flour.)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Try Italian seasoned or panko for extra crunch.)
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Cooking spray (For spraying the coated onion.)

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by carefully slicing the onion from the top downwards, avoiding cutting all the way through to leave the base intact. Aim for about 12-16 evenly spaced cuts.
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together until well combined.
  4. Place the breadcrumbs in a separate dish.
Coating and Cooking
  1. First, dunk the onion into the flour mixture, making sure to coat all the petals well.
  2. Next, dip the coated onion into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
  3. Finally, coat the onion in breadcrumbs for that perfect crunch.
  4. Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray, and place the onion inside.
  5. Spray the top of the onion with a bit more cooking spray.
  6. Cook in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Turn halfway for even cooking.
  7. Carefully remove and let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Pairs well with creamy ranch dressing, spicy sriracha mayo, or zesty homemade remoulade. For reheating, use an air fryer at 350°F for about 5-7 minutes.
