  • 3 large large onions
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar Consider apple cider vinegar for a sweeter taste.
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon peppercorns
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed Can swap out for shallots for a milder flavor.
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • Butter to taste Butter for serving Generously top the onions before serving.

Preparation
  1. In a large pot, combine the water, vinegar, salt, peppercorns, garlic, and bay leaf. Bring everything to a boil.
  2. While waiting, peel the onions and gently place them into the boiling water.
  3. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, until the onions are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  4. Carefully remove the onions from the pot and allow them to cool slightly.
  5. Serve the onions warm, topped with a generous pat of butter, and savor each bite!

Notes

Leftover Onion Boil can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply microwave or warm on the stovetop with a splash of water.
