Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables
  • 1 lb lean ground beef or lamb Feel free to swap for lentils or mushrooms for a vegetarian option.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Mashed Potatoes
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (homemade or store-bought) Use warm milk and butter for creaminess.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional) Omit for a lighter version.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare an oven-safe baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the chopped onions and carrots in a splash of oil until softened (about 5 minutes).
  3. Add the ground beef or lamb, breaking it apart as it cooks for about 7 minutes until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and frozen peas. Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, and simmer for approximately 10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  5. If making fresh mashed potatoes, boil the peeled potatoes until tender (about 20 minutes), then mash with butter and milk until creamy.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Spread the meat mixture evenly into your baking dish.
  2. Layer the mashed potatoes on top and sprinkle shredded cheese if desired.
  3. Bake for around 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  4. Serve warm and enjoy!
